RootMetrics study: Verizon ranks first in South Florida Verizon took most of the top honors in RootMetrics' latest look at the performance of wireless carriers in South Florida.
Verizon (NYSE: VZ) was first in data, text and combined service, while there was no clear winner for mobile calls.
To evaluate the region, RootMetrics said it performed more than 26,000 call, data and text tests over seven days, covering all hours of the day and night.
Tests were conducted using the company's RootScout app running on off-the-shelf, Android-based smartphones...

The Miramar-based airline (NASDAQ: SAVE) also said it would start twice-daily nonstop service to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport from Las Vegas on Feb. 9.

Tue, 07 Feb 2012 22:52:50 +0000 HCA to break ground on Poinciana hospital Osceola Regional Medical Center will break ground Feb. 7 on a $65 million hospital project in Poinciana.
The project will start with a 12-bed, one-story, 11,000-square-foot freestanding emergency department with a helicopter pad, laboratory, pharmacy and imaging. The second phase includes a $33.7 million, 30-bed, two-story, 94,000-square-foot hospital. Phase 3 is a medical office building.

The On Number analysis found South Florida is down 182,900 jobs, which is behind the 432,000 still lost in Los Angeles, the 238,800 lost in Chicago and the 217,700 lost in Detroit.
Only 13 of the nation's major metro's have regained the jobs they lost during the recession.
South Florida had 2.07 million private sector jobs in 2006, but that fell to 1...

The 663,948-square-foot mall previously had its mortgage scheduled to mature in January 2012. For that reason, the $120.5 million loan with a commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS) trust was placed into special servicing in January 2011, as Fitch Ratings first reported.
The mall, at 20505 S. Dixie Highway, is owned by Southland Mall Properties, an affiliate of New York-based Investcorp International...

But that’s what happened today, when the Medical Center of Trinity opened its doors to patients who formerly were at Community Hospital in New Port Richey. At the same time, St. Joseph’s Hospital’s Behavioral Health Center in Tampa welcomed its first patients when about 40 patients transferred from their rooms at St. Joe’s to the new facility about a half mile away.
The new facilities are among the more than $800 million in health care construction projects that were under way in Tampa Bay last year, evidence of the strength of the local health care industry...

The live music festival is expected to begin at 11 a.m. and conclude around 11 p.m.
The event will “celebrate the best of Tampa Bay's diverse music scene, highlighting local emerging acts and nationally recognized headliners,” according to its website.
Music acts will perform on a main stage in Curtis Hixon Park, a second stage in Kiley Gardens and an acoustic stage in Kiley Gardens’ amphitheater.

Tue, 07 Feb 2012 19:31:19 +0000 Tampa woman indicted for tax fraud, identity theft Belinda Brooks was arrested on charges in a 17-count federal indictment related to tax fraud activities.
Charges include filing a false tax return, theft of government property in the form of tax refunds, aggravated identity theft and making false claims, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Robert E. O’Neill.
Brooks is accused of stealing the names and Social Security numbers of others to file fraudulent tax returns and obtain tax refunds for tax years 2008 and 2009.
The case is part of Operation Rainmaker, a joint investigation by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
