Business Networking in the 21st Century -  Art of Networking™ -  Starting a New Business

Find archives of business networking lessons at www.GenieNetwork.net   I have spoken to so many of you who have been to my Art of Networking™ sessions who have had great success in today's marketplace.

"The person who figures out how to harness the collective genius of his or her organization is going to blow the competition away." - Walter Wiriston

Today let us discuss the Art of Networking™ - Starting a New Business.

Each month every business professional should take a hour to develop your monthly goals and meetings.  Because this is a large part of your business referrals which equate to sales which develops into your income.

Mention the word "networking" - and most people do not understand it or may have some idea of what it is but need to learn the process.  Do you really understand the process, benefits and dynamics that link people together?  Genie Network is about teaching you that process and connecting you with the right people.

Last week we discussed Business Networking and the Power of a Vision.  This week let us chat about starting a new business.

Many of you at this time may be thinking of starting a business.  Some already own a business and some are just thinking what if?

Over the past few months we have talked about goals, visions, persistence, business networking and more.  Many business professionals are concerned about their future.  Some of you may be thinking about starting your own business.  I would say go for it however, business ownership is not for everyone.  Before you embark on this journey there are a few things one must know.

First do you have the passion for the business you want to start?  Is your expertise in this area?  Does your idea or product solve a problem?  Is your idea a niche idea?

Do you have the stamina and discipline to manage your new business.  Partnerships can be tricky and you should think twice before taking on a partner.

If you are working now - can you continue to work until your income from your business is enough?  How will you finance your new business.  Think twice before you pull from your retirement fund or mortgage your home.

The best way to make a decision is to write your business plan.  By writing a business plan you will be able to make decisions based on fact.  There are many good software programs that will assist you in writing a business plan.  Look for one that includes financial, projections and cost of doing business sections.  Buy completing these sections it will give you a broader view of what you can accomplish.

Starting a new business can be very rewarding however, it can be a ton of work for little or no money for some time.  Are you ready to make the sacrifices?

Over my business career I have started 6 businesses.  I have sold 4 of them.  It is a labor of passion.

It is awesome becoming your own boss.  It is awesome having the potential of unlimited income.  It is grueling until you receive the income.  It is very long long hours for little or no money at times.  One needs to be very self directed.  If you have a business you will not be able to golf every afternoon.

Maybe you have already thought of an idea for a business.  Have you thought about a name?  Once you have thought about this and found one you think will work you will need to protect your ideas.  There are trademarks, patents and copyrights you may need to file.  Do your research.

Where will you do business?  In your area only, Internet, from home office or in a mall.  How much rent will you have to pay?  What will be the long term lease you will need to sign?  What if you outgrow your space can you move?

There are many considerations - employees, insurance, payroll, taxes and benefits.  These will now be your responsibility.

Seems a bit overwhelming - not if you educate yourself and are a great business networker.  By networking you will find the expertise you need.

Over the years the largest part of my success has been with a mentor.  I have more than one.  You will need a business mentor, a personal mentor to keep you going.  Your business mentor provides you with an objective view of your business.

Your mentors are your pillars in your world of business.  The best way to find mentors with expertise is through business networking.

You can always pick out the business owners who do not have great business mentors.  They struggle with new processes and ideas.  They sometimes appear scattered or convoluted.  With mentors they help you keep focus of your goals.  They make you think differently about your decisions.

The biggest decisions you will have to make about starting a business is money.  Money is a big key in starting a business.  Most business professionals that I have consulted have the money to set up they business.  They have the plan on how to make money.  They know who and what they will sell.  They know where their business will be done.  They know who their potential customers are.  The one thing almost all new business owners forget is marketing.

Marketing can make or break your business.  Business networking and word of mouth advertising is key.  But you will need more.

Back in 1993 the inception of the Resource Group which later became the Twin City Resource Group did just that.  The Resource Group was a group of about 72 business professionals that primarily dealt with business to consumers.  Many had brick and mortar stores that sold their wares.  This conception of co-op marketing was at it's prime.  In place of spending 2600 dollars per month we all had the reach with 250 dollars.

When you are building a business marketing should be a huge part of your start up costs and way to grow your business.  Radio, TV and Print advertising can be costly.  When planning you marketing program, as a business professional you need to look at your target audience and what would be the best solution for your new business.  Find out the success and cost of each.  It can be very a very expensive mistake.  Research and results from each consideration need to be studied.

The good news is there is a whole lot of information to assist you in making the decision and plan.  Planning and research are key in the start of a new business.  Over the next few weeks we will discuss different aspects of owning your own business.

Today their are many websites that provide good reliable information.  Here are a few:

http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=99336,00.html

 http://www.uspto.gov/

Your vision should be clear and concise this is the key to making your dreams and visions come true.  One must have a clear vision knowing exactly what you want.

If you do not have a clear, concise vision you will not get to your destination.

Last week we discussed Business Networking and going fishing.  This week I would like to share a true story and the Power of a Vision.

Many of you at this time may be thinking of starting a business.  Some already own a business and some are just thinking what if?

Last fall we talked about a vision board and how powerful a vision board is.  I wonder how many actually created that vision board.  I am going to be adventures and say that many of you probably did not.  Those are the same people that are sitting there saying we are in a tough economy, I cannot get ahead, I am happy to be at status quo, new business is hard to come by the list could go on and on.  Remember this is their vision without even saying this is their vision.  You will become what you think and seek. ALWAYS!  It is the law of the universe.

My very dear friend who has a business and had inadvertently put all her eggs in one basket.  Had begin to have doubts.  Money was getting very tight and doom and gloom were on the horizon.  As we chatted we talked about all the successes and what she had envision for herself and she was thinking that it would all slip away in a few months.

The conversation changed to what else and what other opportunities had she not thought of that she could be doing to make her original dream come true.  We explored different ideas.  One idea that she perused came up with a good possibility.  One catch, she had not calculated all the possibilities of expense and that idea fell to the wayside - back to square one and time is not on her side.

During this time I as her mentor kept her focus OUT with the the doomsday approach.  As she explored different ideas we chatted about another door opened.

Scared of the possibilities of all her hard work for not we had to keep those thoughts and ideas at bay.  Why, because if those thoughts of failure creep into your vision they could become real.  Exploring another possibility that came to fruition she took the last bit of cash and invested a trip and time into this.  It could not fail - the presentation was perfected, what she wanted from it was clear and concise, she had all her calculations perfected calculated to make a deal work.  All she needed was the offer.

The vision was clear and concise this is the key to making your dreams and visions come true.  One must have a clear vision knowing exactly what you want.

So the day came the presentation was given.  She made the cut and at the end she made the deal that will set her in motion to fulfill her vision board.

As a result this has developed into more success and more deals that will grow even larger.  She has the plan, vision and details in place to handle this.

The next step.  Fear of success.  You laugh there is such a thing as "fear of success".  Our next step is planning the success and how to handle the success.  Planning for additional successes and additional streams of income and managing the income are all keys to maintaining her continued success.

The road has been grueling, stressful and uncertain at times.  What kept her on the road to success.  Her vision and the people she chose to keep her on the path to success.  The key ingredient is the vision.

If you do not have a clear, concise vision you will not get to your destination.  Start creating you vision board today!

Your first step should be developing a plan of where you want to be and how you will obtain your goals.  If I sound like a broken record of taking time to plan, work your plan, evaluate, plan, work your plan keeping your end vision in front of you at all times.  You are correctf and it works.

It is time to start today.  It is never too late to start but one needs to start.

Many of you say - I am going to (fill in the blank) if you do not have your plan written down and you are not working your plan you will never get to your vision.

Today:  Get Started!

Write your long term goals
Begin a plan to attain your goals
Start your vision board with you already obtaining your goals

See you at the top!

Each month every business professional should take a hour to develop your monthly goals and meetings.  Because this is a large part of your business referrals which equate to sales which develops into your income.

Last week we discussed Business Networking and capitalizing on change.  Today we are going to discuss going fishing.

Life is like fishing.  No matter what you do in your personal world or business world we all fish.  How is that?  Well let us analyze this together.

When you go fishing you decide on which fishing hole you want to fish at.  This determines what type of fish you are fishing for.  Now you want to bait your hook.  But before you bait your hook you decide what fish you wish to attract.  This is accomplished by the type of bait you use and the type of fish you want to catch.  Making conscious decisions of what do you want from your fishing hole.

All these conscious decisions are made without much thought.  How does this pertain to your business.  Everything - I say.  If you are seeking new customers you must first decide what type of customer you are seeking.  Each and every business professional has a customer type they are seeking.  Customers like fish come in all sizes (revenue), profit margins, cost of doing business and more.  Many of us go to a fishing hole for customers and do not understand what type of fish are in the fishing spot.  So you randomly throw your bait at them.  Running off with your mouth or spending marketing dollars that do not attract your customer.   At the end of the month you wonder why you have not met your goals.  You spent the money and met with all these potential customers and you came up short and wonder why?

When you analyze your month and look at what you have accomplished you can understand why you came up short.  Oh yes, we are in a recession and the self talk of no one has the money people are cutting back.  Some of this is true however, keep in mind the majority of people are doing what they do everyday.  They are making purchasing decisions each and everyday.  The big difference is your bait.  How will it benefit your customer?  What will your product do for them?  Who is your customer?  Why did you choose your customer?  When you present to your customer it should be intentional.  What is the customer's need?  How will your product solve there problem?  In your discovery you need to make additional decisions.  In a very short period of time you need to decide if there is a need.  Are the funds there to purchase when you fill the need.  If not - it is time to set your hook and pull in your hook and check your bait - move on and try again.  Sitting and dangling your hook in the same spot with no response is futile.

Think of all the time wasters you spend time on.  Presenting to potential customers that are not your customer.  Many want but cannot buy and we spend our time on dangling our hooks.  Sometimes you can have the right bait and sit on the best location and come up short.  Learning when to real your line in and move on is key.

Understanding when to cut bait and move on is huge in staying profitable.

You will have potential customers that have the same expectations and agenda such as:

Arguing your price
Asking for the unreasonable
Using economic times to guilt you
Using their economics to guilt you
Threatening I will go to the competitor

The list can go on and on.  Rule number one.  Your price if you do not believe in your price - how will your customers?  If they want to bargain - try a flea market.  Potential customers who want you to throw in the sun, moon and stars are not serious buyers.  I particularly love the potential customers that use guilt.  The cliche' is getting old.  The one I love the best is I will go to your competitor.   If they are threatening now how long do you think they will stay your customer?  The cost of acquiring new business is high and the pay off is typically over a period of time.  Think of the cell business they give you the phone but hope to keep you over a period of time to make back the revenue invested to acquire you as a customer.

Business, shopping and life is like fishing.  Your profit margins are based on when to reel them in and when to set the hook.  If they are nibbling and you never set the hook you will never real them in.  If they do not set in the hook save the time and move on.

The moral of the story is define who your customer is?  What makes your customer?  Where to locate your ideal customer?  Scatter is not prudent and waists your time and theirs.  The cost of scatter costs you in many ways not only in time but in profit, cost of acquisition and more.

Ways to avoid these gaps is to devise a system to qualify your potential customer in less than two minutes.  What makes your customer?  What are the benefits to your potential customer you offer.  Most important - can they afford your service, product or offering?  Reel them in, set the hook - build the relationship.

Let's all go fishing today.  I am going to catch (my fish) who is (what makes your customer) and I will qualify them with these questions.

Create your template of questions and see how much more effective you become.  Happy fishing.
